How to Produce Your Best Work–At a Moment’s Notice!

As I was driving my husband’s truck along White Rock Lake one evening, I was listening to a podcast by a guy I had never heard of. 

His name was Todd Henry, and he works with creatives to help them thrive and produce their best results. 

Todd recognized that people who work in creative fields have to keep themselves fresh to be ready to produce innovative results on demand.  If they burn out, they cannot produce on demand, and their job is in jeopardy or their work is no longer their best.

Through his research, he developed a system to help people stay “FRESH.”  As he was sharing his insights on a podcast, I had to pull the truck over as my chin dropped through the floor. 

I had just released Think Time months earlier and could not believe how Todd’s cutting edge research aligned with our process.  Among other things, our process encourages self-care, regular time to think, relational connectedness, and…well you need to get his book to discover the rest of the life-changing tips.

But for now, whether you consider yourself “creative” or not, you need to produce results on demand each day.

Simply Have A Great Day!

I used to feel like I was a victim of my days.  It was a “good day” or a “bad day” and I didn’t really have much to do with what type it was.

I was along for the ride.

I also used to feel like whether I was successful in the course of a day had something to do with measuring up to an external standard.

What I am sharing in today’s Coaching Minute foundationally transformed how I view my days.

I don’t know of too many ideas have been more transformative for my life than this one.

I was first introduced to this concept by Marcia Ramsland in her book Simplify Your Life: Get Organized and Stay That Way.

In this book, Marcia suggests that I could make a plan for my day and design it in a way that worked for me…in a way that I enjoyed.

At the time, this idea was revolutionary to me.  Up to this point in my life, I had not thought much about what I enjoyed in a day.  I had dutifully sought to do what I thought was supposed to be done.  I had not considered that I was designed purposefully and perfectly to have certain types of days that would bring my heart joy in ways different than others–that certain types of days that would make my heart sing and feel successful to me.  

I had pretty much just compared myself to people I knew, to external pressures that were placed on me and listened unquestioningly to the internal critic in my head.  All of these were not helpful to me and generally left me feeling pretty bad.

I thought that to be productive, purposeful, or effective I needed to somehow become a Type A, organized person who loved to check things off my list and to do stuff all of the time.

Well, that is certainly not me; so in my internal world, I was always failing to live up to my own expectations.  

What a sad thing!  

I am beautifully designed for a unique purpose, but at that time, I was comparing myself to the standard’s of someone else’s unique purpose.  

What an utter waste!!

In her book Simplify Your Life, Marcia taught me to respect my unique design by clarifying the type of life I enjoyed.

Did I enjoy waking up and checking things off quickly or did I enjoy a slow morning?

What pace did I like my days to hold?  Slow, medium, or fast?

What types of activities do I want to include in an ideal day?


As you go into your day today, ask yourself if you are arranging your life in a way that suits how are you are designed. 

What do you enjoy? Are you scheduling your life in a way that helps you thrive? Or do you have an image in your head of something you “should” be or do to be successful today?  Let go of the external image of who you think you should be, and embrace who you really are.

Your design is perfectly aligned with your purpose.

Embrace this truth, be yourself, and simply have a great day!  You will be so happy you did!

Just. Do. Something!!

So often, when we think of making a difference in the world, we feel like we need to do something really big.  Then, because we can’t do something big…

We.

Don’t.

Do.

Anything.

Right before I have had my last two babies, I have been really struck with global issues of poverty and environmental care.  :/

As you parents and grandparents well know, right before you have a baby is not the best time to start a global campaign to change the world. 🙂

Think Time encourages you to be mindful of what you really want.  The first phase—the Dream Phase–guides you to think about things as if there were no obstacles.  Then, the Decide Phase helps you sift and sort the ideas to fit your real life.

So, I gave it some think-time.

I accepted that I wanted to make a difference in the world and also acknowledged my real season of life.

Then, ideas came to me of how I could do something aligned with my values–even if smaller.

I didn’t ask myself if I could make a difference or not. That would be either/or thinking—which is “bad” thinking in the world of Think Time.  Instead, I asked myself the Think Time purpose question: “What can only I do?“

Here are three solutions that came to mind when I asked this question of myself in seasons that would not fit the “go big or go home” mentality.

#1 Poverty. 

Before having my fourth child, I was personally struck with the needs of the poor. When I applied a little think-time and asked what only I could do, I realized… 

  • I live in one of the most privileged cities in our hemisphere. 
  • I also realized I have a friend who works with underprivileged expectant women in the poorest country in our hemisphere—Haiti.
  • The third thing that came to mind is our shared passion of supporting the bond between moms and babies.  

What came of this?  My first annual “Haiti Baby Carrier Drive!”  Now, I had never done anything like this.  However, when I thought about it, all I had to do was make a website page, drop off some boxes in strategic locations, and tell people about it. Then, all I needed to do is collect the baby carriers and ship them to my friend.  

She was already doing the educational work with the young moms.  Voila!  A Think Time Solution!  

Guess what happened!  I didn’t save the world.  (That is Someone else’s job.) However, my friend later told me that there were four preemies born at just the time the carriers arrived.  The midwives believed that these carriers given by generous moms in Dallas may have helped save their lives.  I am so glad I gave some think-time to what was on my heart and didn’t think that because I had a full plate, I couldn’t do anything.

#2 The Environment.

As I write this blog, I have eight weeks until baby number five is due. This time, however, I am struck with the enormity of global environmental issues. (Rumor has it that frogs may be getting hurt due to chemicals we are putting into the ground.  My kids and I don’t like that.)

Well, I cannot do everything.  However, maybe I can do one thing.  So I asked myself, “What can only I do?” 

And is there anything small I can do?  

Here’s what came to mind.  I have a couple friends who sell chemical free products. One sells cleaning cloths that allow you to clean your house without chemicals. Another sells chemical free make up.  So, I thought, “Why don’t I host a party?”  I love parties. They will do all the work.  I will have all the fun. A small difference could be made.  Voilà. A think-time solution.

#3 Think Time.

The fact that you were reading this blog right now is a result of this same process. 

Throughout my life, I’ve been passionate about helping people to move beyond perceived obstacles toward their dreams and their unique purpose. 

So, I looked at what I had. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have had experience working with people as a therapist with brain injured patients. I have over a decade of leadership training. I have graduate level training in creative thinking.

But.  I also have young children.

So, I did not create a coaching business that would take me all over the world during this season.

I recognized my desire to be very present with my husband and kids during this unique season of having young children.  

But.

I still wanted to help people.

So, I created a product that would help people in the same way I would help them if I was sitting across the room from them or teaching from a platform.

Voila!  A Think Time solution!


What is it that you really want to do but tend to think you cannot accomplish because of your season of life?

Is there something that only you can do in this field that no one else can? 

Give it some think-time and see what surfaces! 

Get clarity on what you really want.  Reduce it to fit your season of life.

You may be surprised at the difference one person really can make–even when life is busy, distracting, and demanding!

I am So Tired!

Are you exhausted?

If you are like so many people I know you are wearing yourself out to “get stuff done.”

Today I want to challenge you to ask yourself the question, “Is it worth it?”

Are these things that I’m doing worth my energy, my time, and my health?

When you are exhausted, you’re not doing your best work, you are not connecting with others well, and you’re not ready to meet the challenges of the day.

Are the tasks you are doing right now that are wearing you out worth that to you?

Is the trade off worth it?

“That’s When The Kids Came.” On Repurposing Our Goals.

Life is not all about achieving our goals.

It’s about living our lives.

Sometimes we set aside our goals for a time to live more fully focused on what matters more.  In other words, we repurpose our goals…we shift our focus.


I was recently talking with a friend who adopted a sibling set of three a few years ago.  She was describing their move to the city and all of the renovations she and her husband completed on their home.  Then, she described a specific location where the renovations stopped.

“That’s when the kids came.”

Her adoption process turned out to involve an incredibly short wait, and when her kids arrived, there was no turning back to finish renovations!

There was not a hint of regret in her voice.  It was clear where her priorities were.  Welcoming these precious kids into her life immediately took precedence over home renovations. What had been important a month earlier now was not even being considered for time and attention.

This is good.

We do well to constantly reevaluate our priorities according to our season of life and adjusting accordingly.

Life is meant to be lived to the full in the present.

More is Less

Last week, I reminded you of the truth that often: Less is more.

 

This week, I want to remind you that often… More is less.

Sometimes, we say “yes” too quickly.  There are so many wonderful opportunities!  When we say “yes” to too many of them, unfortunately, our most important YESes are unintentionally told NO.

Let’s quickly discuss a few.

Relationships.  Unfortunately, when we say “yes” to too much, it is often our dearest relationships that suffer the most.  As people, we are designed to live in quality connections with others.  When we are busy about many things, this is one of the first things to give.  We’ve all experienced this.

Health.  Sometimes we push ourselves so hard to keep up with our “yeses” that we neglect our nutrition, our rest, and our exercise.  We are designed to be dependent on these basic needs to deliver our best results.  Unfortunately, cheating our health is a temporary fix that our bodies will not allow us to do for long.  (Read one man’s story here.) When we neglect our health, we often sabotage our future success.  Oops.

Quality and excellence.  You’ve experienced this–from other people of course. ; ) You are working on a team project and someone who says “yes” to too many things is routinely the one who is dropping the ball or producing shoddy work.  It hurts the quality of the delivered result.  They feel like they are doing “everything they can” but you know there were a lot of choices before that point of crisis that led to the embarrassing results.  The last thing you want is to be “that person” in someone else’s life!  You know how it feels on the other side!

This is why it is worth a little think-time to get really clear on your “YESes.”  Only then will you know where to confidently apply your “NOs.”  Then, you will have more of what you want.  And less of what you don’t want.

And, you can confidently live your life focused on what matters most.

5 Steps to Becoming An Effective Delegator

Delegation may not always come naturally to you, and for some of us, we are constantly trying to perfect this area of leadership. It’s worth striving for perfection because when you have motivated people who trust you, you’ll see your business propelled forward. Simon Sinek says this of delegation: “You have to earn trust by communicating and demonstrating that you share the same values and beliefs. You have to talk about your WHY and prove it with WHAT you do. Again, a WHY is just a belief, HOWs are the actions we take to realize that belief, and WHATs are the results of those actions. When all three are in balance, trust is built and value is perceived.”

Here are a few key points that I have realized over the years to help me perfect my “Art of Delegation”. Take what works for you and make it your own in your journey to building trust with your team.

Start With the End in Mind

1)  Delegation to me is “beginning with the end in mind.”  Meaning … asking those on my team to execute tasks that serve an ultimate purpose and either solve a problem or move our business forward.  Assigning these tasks help me free up space/time in my day so that I can take care of the “one-offs” and critical daily tasks that I, as a Leader, need to attend to.

2)  When you delegate, delegate a result not a task.  What is the end result that you are looking for?  Give your teammate and/or employee the opportunity to work toward a goal and then celebrate the result with them.  Not only will you give them something to celebrate but you have also given them a sense of ownership and responsibility for their projects/efforts.

3)  Don’t delegate things you love doing.  In most cases, the things you HATE to do take more time to do and distract you from the goals you are working toward.  Delegate those tasks to team members who are more qualified and or patient and willing to execute those items so you won’t be bogged down by doing them.

4)  Express to your team the WHY behind the WHAT so they can feel passionate about the projects they are executing. Understand that people will strive and toil … and the WHY can fuel them.

5)  Be mindful of the tasks you ask others to execute (from a timing and knowledge-base perspective) and express gratitude to them when tasks are complete.  This creates a greater relationship with you and your employees and makes you someone they will want to follow.

You don’t have to jump in with all these ideas at once. Try a few out and see what happens when you focus on the why behind your tasks and the ultimate result you want with each delegation assignment.

The art of delegation isn’t just about you as a leader though and how you divvy out assignments. Delegating is about knowing your team and the powerful part they play in the process. When employees know your motivation and recognize your trust, they feel more connected to the mission of your business. When there is trust, you will then see a healthier bottom line, which translates directly into everyone’s success.

What’s The Big Idea? On Thinking About Our Thinking.

It’s been a great week for me.  I have been doing some mini trainings here in Dallas as well as virtually with some online groups online.  It has been refreshing for me to think “big picture” about our message and distill it into simplicity for those who have never heard about Think Time.

What are some of our big picture thoughts?  Let’s start with a quote from Uncle Al!

“We cannot solve our problems with the same THINKING we used when we created them.”  — Albert Einstein

Take a moment and write or draw some of the successes you are experiencing and some of the problems you are facing in your life.

Some things are going well, and other things are not.  In the areas in which we are struggling or stuck, we need to develop new ways to think about things.  Then, we can get unstuck.

Psychologist Henry Cloud notes that 90% of the thoughts we have today are the same thoughts we had yesterday.

While this has worked well for us in many areas in life, there are areas in life in which our old habits are no longer serving us.  Instead, they are actually hindering us.  When we rise above our thoughts and think about our thinking, new neural pathways begin to form and we can begin to get unstuck.

This is the heart of what we are doing at Think Time.  We are practicing healthy thinking over and over again…sort of “trying on” the thinking patterns of top performers and wise people.  The more we practice these thinking patterns, over and over again, the stronger these new neural pathways will grow, and we can begin to get unstuck.
