It’s a New Year!

Happy 2019!

It’s a new year!

The slate is blank.

Last year is officially over.

This year has officially begun.

Do you feel the freedom to dream big?

Do you feel the freedom to do things differently?

Do you know how to get better results and have more time?

Do you know how to become who you want to be while still getting stuff done?

Do you have the Life-Coaching Planner that captures your dreams and moves you toward your goals?

If not, get on that!

Do You Lose Your Ideas All of the Time?

If you are like a lot of creative people I know, you scribble your ideas on the back of envelopes on napkins, and on small pieces of paper that—truth be told— will never be seen again.

You write them down because you have the best intentions of following through on them at the right time. You don’t want to forget them.

Or if you are somewhat organized, you have a journal, or bullet journal, or some other method of keeping your ideas, but how do you find the right idea when you need it?

A lot of times, we don’t remember where we put something. But we DO remember WHEN we thought of it.

The Think Time Life Coaching Planner allows you to dream big when you are making your plans…thinking of everything that comes to mind– even if you’re not going to act on them immediately.

That way, when you later want to find your idea, you can think, “I was thinking about that in August.”  And, you can flip back to your August Think Time and find your idea relatively easily.

Your ideas matter. If you can’t find them, how are you going to implement them?

So, even if you have another scheduler or app you already love, you can use your Think Time planner as an “idea book” or a “brain book” to capture the ideas that matter most.

So, when it is the right time to implement your ideas, you won’t miss a beat!

Just. Do. Something!!

So often, when we think of making a difference in the world, we feel like we need to do something really big.  Then, because we can’t do something big…

: (

business vision: think unconventionally, fish jumping into a bigger bowl

Right before I have had my last two babies, I have been really struck with global issues of poverty and environmental care.  :/

As you parents and grandparents well know, right before you have a baby is not the best time to start a global campaign to change the world. 🙂

Think Time encourages you to be mindful of what you really want.  The first phase—the Dream Phase–guides you to think about things as if there were no obstacles.  Then, the Decide Phase helps you sift and sort the ideas to fit your real life.

So, I gave it some think-time.

I accepted that I wanted to make a difference in the world and also acknowledged my real season of life.

Then, ideas came to me of how I could do something aligned with my values–even if smaller.

I didn’t ask myself if I could make a difference or not. That would be either/or thinking—which is “bad” thinking in the world of Think Time.  Instead, I asked myself the Think Time purpose question: “What can only I do?“

Here are three solutions that came to mind when I asked this question of myself in seasons that would not fit the “go big or go home” mentality.

#1 Poverty.

Before having my fourth child, I was personally struck with the needs of the poor. When I applied a little think-time and asked what only I could do, I realized…

  • I live in one of the most privileged cities in our hemisphere.
  • I also realized I have a friend who works with underprivileged expectant women in the poorest country in our hemisphere—Haiti.
  • The third thing that came to mind is our shared passion of supporting the bond between moms and babies.

What came of this?  My first annual “Haiti Baby Carrier Drive!”  Now, I had never done anything like this.  However, when I thought about it, all I had to do was make a website page, drop off some boxes in strategic locations, and tell people about it. Then, all I needed to do is collect the baby carriers and ship them to my friend.

She was already doing the educational work with the young moms.  Voila!  A Think Time Solution!

Guess what happened!  I didn’t save the world.  (That is Someone else’s job.) However, my friend later told me that there were four preemies born at just the time the carriers arrived.  The midwives believed that these carriers given by generous moms in Dallas may have helped save their lives.  I am so glad I gave some think-time to what was on my heart and didn’t think that because I had a full plate, I couldn’t do anything.

#2 The Environment.

As I write this blog, I have eight weeks until baby number five is due. This time, however, I am struck with the enormity of global environmental issues. (Rumor has it that frogs may be getting hurt due to chemicals we are putting into the ground.  My kids and I don’t like that.)

Well, I cannot do everything.  However, maybe I can do one thing.  So I asked myself, “What can only I do?”

And is there anything small I can do?

Here’s what came to mind.  I have a couple friends who sell chemical free products. One sells cleaning cloths that allow you to clean your house without chemicals. Another sells chemical free make up.  So, I thought, “Why don’t I host a party?”  I love parties. They will do all the work.  I will have all the fun. A small difference could be made.  Voilà. A think-time solution.

#3 Think Time.

The fact that you were reading this blog right now is a result of this same process.

Throughout my life, I’ve been passionate about helping people to move beyond perceived obstacles toward their dreams and their unique purpose.

So, I looked at what I had. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have had experience working with people as a therapist with brain injured patients. I have over a decade of leadership training. I have graduate level training in creative thinking.

But.  I also have young children.

So, I did not create a coaching business that would take me all over the world during this season.

I recognized my desire to be very present with my husband and kids during this unique season of having young children.

I still wanted to help people.

So, I created a product that would help people in the same way I would help them if I was sitting across the room from them or teaching from a platform.

Voila!  A Think Time solution!

What is it that you really want to do but tend to think you cannot accomplish because of your season of life?

Is there a reduced vision of this dream that you can move toward?

Is there something that only you can do in this field that no one else can?

Give it some think-time and see what surfaces!

Get clarity on what you really want.  Reduce it to fit your season of life.

You may be surprised at the difference one person really can make–even when life is busy, distracting, and demanding!

Are You Comfortable Feeling Incompetent? You Should Be.

On a 2017 episode of The EntreLeadership Podcast, Ken Coleman interviewed author and entrepreneur Seth Godin.  Ken introduced him as one of the most brilliant thinkers of our time.

Seth then completed the interview, and he did not disappoint.

He says that if we are to change (hear: grow!) we must be comfortable with feeling incompetent.

Seth continued.

Often people do not change because they don’t want to be uncomfortable and feel incompetent.

He says this feeling of incompetence, however, is often a prerequisite to growth and change.

People who resist these negative feelings are less likely to grow…less likely to change.

How can we apply this understanding?

Well, if you are a leader in an organization–which many of you are–one take-away, Seth suggests, is to not be surprised when your people do not immediately embrace the change you want to bring into your company.

You likely hired these people for their competence, so don’t be surprised when they resist the feelings of incompetence that come with new initiatives.  Be patient with them.

Also, as you go forward, hire people who are not only competent, but also curious and humble…in other words, they are willing to go through the negative feelings of incompetence because they value change and growth more than always feeling competent.

It may take a little longer in the interviewing process, but it will be worth it in the long run.

How can I apply this in my personal life?

Be aware of this dynamic any time you are presented with something new (for instance, a planning process like Think Time that is a little different than everyone else…moving beyond mere lines and words and including new techniques like visualization, drawing, and mind-mapping).

Embrace the fact that you may be naturally inclined to resist things that are good for you because you don’t want to feel incompetent.

Have a conscious dialogue with yourself before you say “no” to a great opportunity.

Are you resisting because you are uncomfortable with feelings of incompetence?

Can you reframe the feelings of incompetence to mean that you are making progress toward change and growth?

Can you use this new understanding to set yourself on a new learning trajectory this coming year?

Be encouraged.  Because and not many people are willing to move through the uncomfortable feelings of incompetence, you can quickly set yourself apart from your competition by embracing it as a prerequisite for growth and change.  Embrace this mindset tip, and you are already a step ahead.

What are your thoughts?

What is one thing you have learned that has changed your life?

Was it uncomfortable at first to learn it?

Are you glad you learned it in spite of your initial resistant feelings?

Please tell us about it in the comments below.

How to Get Started with Your Think Time Digital Downloads

Hey guys!

This year, we have released our Think Time Purpose Planners as Digital Downloads, and it is awesome to see what you all can do with them.  I am learning from you!

Here are the two main ways you can use your Think Time Digital Download PDFs.  First, you can print them and think-time on paper.  Second, you can download your PDF, and use it on your iPad or device.

  •  Print and Bind your Purpose Planner–any way you like!  When you print your Purpose Planner, you can be as simple or as custom as you would like to be.
    • You can simply print your PDF at home, hole-punch your sheets and place them in a binder.
    • You can also have your PDF printed at your local FedEx Kinkos, Office Depot, etc… with a coil binding.  (The layout is more precisely designed for a coil than a binder, but either way can work.)
    • Another option is to discuss your needs with a customer representative from an awesome paper store like Clampitt Paper here in Texas.  This is especially fun if you are printing for a group and want to customize “team” colors or paper selections.  I also recommend this option if you would like your PDFs to be printed on higher-end papers that may not be carried at more generic stores.  (My personal favorite.)
  • Download your Purpose Planner to your iPad or device.  Just as the sky is the limit on paper selections at Clampitt, the sky is also the limit on app selections when you use your iPad or your favorite device.  (My only caveat is that if you choose to use Think Time on your device, be sure that you put your device on Airplane Mode to get the most out of your think-time!!)
    • Here are two ways that Think Timers have used their downloads this year.
      • Think Time with One Note.
        • Stacy uses her Think Time Purpose Planner with the app One Note.
        • Here is what she had to say, “It’s a little bit more of a manual setup, but one note is organized into notebooks, sections, and pages. I have each quarter/month/week setup as their own page and arranged them so the are side by side like they would be in the printed book. I also made them a background image for the page, so I can draw or type on top of them. Having each one be it’s own page gives me some extra space around it for extra lists of things to do, or sketching out design ideas, etc.”
        • This is what it looks like:

  • Think Time with Good Note.
    • Julie uses her Think Time Purpose Planner with the app Good Note.
    • Here is a video tutorial of how she uploads her Think Time Purpose Planner into Good Note with a few tips.

Thank you, Stacy and Julie for sharing your tech-savvy skills with us!  All, please comment below with any and all other options that are out there.  As I said earlier, I am learning from you all!  How will you use your Think Time this year?
